Why do you need to disable something you don't want to use? Can't you just not use it?

Are you afraid you might accidentally change your mind someday and need to prevent yourself from doing this in the future?

Also, many BBS's that I use offer me the chance to change the text-reply field size in my personal preferences. The window can be any size and the page looks just fine. Pretty much ANY text entry field has to be built into a page in such a way that changing the size just pushes things below it lower, just in case a browser draws it larger than planned. I can't think of any sites that don't work that way. This box I'm using on Macrumors right now follows that rule. If I were to drag it large nothing would "break." The stuff below it would just move down.

Can you give any examples of a page that fails this test? I can't think of any offhand.
I think he's talking about making it so people who use the web pages he designs can't resize the textareas (supposedly ruining his designs). IMHO this is a non-issue since when the user first sees the page they will se it as it should be, if they want to make a textarea bigger so they can type in it comfortably then it's their own choice.

The real measurement of how well the CDMA phone will do is when apple releases the iPhone 5. That way people can measure the performance when both carriers are starting off at the same time.

If the iPhone 5 Rumors are true, the iPhone 5 will still have CDMA access for the Verizon version and all of its crippled features: slow network, no data/voice multitasking, limited conference call abilities.

I went cartoony this month. I'm cycling through about 10 off David Lanham's (http://dlanham.com/art/threadtroll/) site.

I discovered him through an article (http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/07/geek-artist-making-50-caricatures-over-facetime-4/) about his awesome Facetime sketches. Too bad he is booked until next year :( I really want one.

The first Avid came out in 1989 on a Mac IIx. Most people up until a couple of years ago where still editing with Avid Xpress/Film Composer on Power Macintosh 9600's and G3/G4 machines because they cut and cut really well. You used to not be able to separate the word Apple from Avid until they started being bad about working with other developers over the span of OS X. I.E. Avid, Adobe & Macromedia. And developing competing products. You've seen what Steve can do with a product like flash and ban it from an OS. So Adobe and Avid started not putting all their eggs in one basket and that's why you started seeing alot of software on apple's migrate to PC's because of Apple's behavior for better or worse.
IMO the story goes slightly different. Apple was circling the drain, Mac-centric developers went "Oh, *****!" and developed Windows versions of their Apps. Steve went "Oh, *****" and started developing first party apps as a matter of necessity. It's not a coincidence that a rash of first party apps started appearing around the same time (99/00). iMovie, iTunes, iDVD and iPhoto all hit the streets around the same time and they were all free. FCP landed during the same time and while it was not free it was ridiculously cheaper than Avid's offerings.

Avid also flirted w/the idea of dropping the Mac entirely when the G4 started to stagnate (thanks Motorola), but Mac faithful editors dang near busted out the torches and pitch forks so Avid quickly backed peddled. The PC version of Avid did start to take priority though and it was only a couple of years ago that platform parity returned to Avid's products.

I had battery drain with 4.3.1 until I turned off Ping and restarted my phone. Since then, good battery life.

Same here, very noticeable decrease in my iPhone 4's battery life after 4.3.1. After doing some research, I disabled Ping and everything is back to normal.

I'm not sure how Apple can be disappointed with iPhone's CDMA numbers. First of all, it took far too long for the iPhone to go CDMA. Apple was foolish to sign a 5 year exclusivity agreement with AT&T in a market where technology can be turned upside down in 12 months. Did Apple really think there would be no competition within that 5 year time frame?

Apple handed market share to Android, and continues to do so with its 1+ year product update cycles. Look, Apple, this is what frustrated us when you were using Motorola chips in the Mac - you blamed Motorola for your update cycles because they were not improving the G4/G5 series processors. Then you switched to Intel, which improved the update cycle a bit for iMacs and MacBooks.

Apple's competitors update their products twice a year. The Xoom is going to have a successor in a few months. Look at how quickly Android smartphones are being updated with the latest and greatest technology. Apple just can't sit still while their competition is grinding out one great product after another. Eventually people will see past cosmetic UI differences and go with the phone their friend has, or what their family uses, etc., and that is quickly going to be Android.

Apple stock is down almost 3% today, not sure if it's because of the news or profit taking among shareholders, but it's definitely something to watch. All the analysts are predicting their stock to go to $400-$500, but with Android gaining so much traction I fail to see how this is possible.

I wanted very much to buy an iPad 2. But after seeing the dismal display and camera quality in person, and the fact that it didn't offer anything new or exciting over the iPad 1, I decided to wait for the Android tablets to hit in force and compare them to iPad 3. All I can say to Apple is that the iPhone 5 and iPad 3 better blow us all away, and they better be more than just incremental updates. If all we get this year is an iPhone 4S, Apple is going to lose this battle.

For Apple, the future rests with iOS 5. It better be good.

Can Apple really stop TJ Maxx from selling their iPads?

I thought the Authorised Reseller Programme was just that: an "Apple-certified" or "Apple-approved" reseller? Surely any reseller who doesn't have this "sign of approval" still can sell the iPad?

I don't really know the answer to that since every store which I've seen here in the UK which sells Apple products are authorised resellers.

Sorry if it's obvious, it's just that the response makes it sound like only retailers approved by Apple can sell their products; sort of like a cease and desist threat.

No, again, Apple can't stop them from selling the iPad. But it does mean that the iPads TJ Maxx is getting aren't being acquired directly from Apple. It means that they are buying them from a 3rd party. All Apple COULD do is terminate the 3rd party's Apple account (meaning that the 3rd party can no longer purchase directly from Apple) if they want to (if it was a large enough sale to TJ Maxx...80 iPads probably won't matter to Apple). An "Apple approved" retailer is one that has been authorized by Apple to buy Apple products directly from Apple, and thereby get all of the advertising perks, merchandising, etc from Apple.

Those for the death penalty. How do you feel about Manning (I think that's his name. The guy that released the classified documents), if found guilty he can get the death penalty for it. Hugh

That's horrible. Definitely not death penalty material. Actually, it's not even life in prison material.

And if you get rid of those extra appeals then you will kill more innocent people, and how is that different from murder?

Wow, again with the innocent people argument? How many times do i have to explain that there are many clear cut cases where there is no chance of innocence before you people get it through your heads? I already named two of them. While i acknowledge past wrongs, this is pretty much next to impossible today thanks to dna technology which only really went mainstream in the last decade. sorry guys, but there is no way ill be convinced that killing a serial killer is immoral.

How anyone could seriously think that 16 years behind bars, even with a television, is a cushy way to spend a life is beyond me. Who here would volunteer?

 you've got to be joking right now. it's not supposed to be cushy, it's supposed to be horrible, and it's supposed to last until the day they die if they don't get the death penalty. before we were talking about life in prison without parole versus the death penalty, and now you're saying that someone who is currently death penalty worthy in the states should be put in prison for 16 years and thats sufficient? Let's be clear because i don't want to accuse you of implying something you're not. Is this or is this not what you are saying?

I wonder how many of these posts are trolls? I haven't had any issues whatsoever with 4.3.1. I also didn't have any problems with 4.3; battery life has been absolutely stellar and call performance actually improved in 4.3.1.

The timing of all these "bitching" posts just seems suspicious.

    Try simple logic.

Apple is releasing an update to fix bugs (after having just released an earlier update to fix bugs). And so people post about their bugs. There's nothing "suspicious" about this at all.

If you are "suspicious" of these posts because you haven't had any issues with 4.3.1, then why do you think that apple is releasing a bug fix? Because there are no bugs?

No, Apple is releasing a bugfix to fix bugs. Do you think that Apple is lying about the bugs? Or is Apple just "bitching?"

[...] This would just mean us designers would have to spend that much more time envisioning what would happen if a user resized every form element on every page and incorporating it into our layouts. This is why I hope there's a way to disable it outright.

You already have to envision what will happen when a user changes the text size. The web is not print or TV, it's supposed to be flexible and to be controlled by the user, not the designer. Your website should look good wether the user changes the text size, disables plug-ins, disables images or even disables CSS.

Granted, the website won't look exactly the same in each case, but the content and the structure should be visible in all cases if the website is coded properly. That's the power of CSS and structured content.

Using javascript to disable a browser feature (like the useless "disable right-click" one) is working against your viewers. A simple "disable javascript" will also bypass your script.

When oh when are they going to update that insanely arcane iCal "feature" on .Mac. Why isn't it easy to access my calendars from my .Mac homepage? And WHY can't I ADD an event from .Mac. So frustrating.

And can we please for the love of God get a .Mac site optimized for mobile?
