WASHINGTON: Spelling tongue twister "cymotrichous", Greek for having wavy hair, Indian American Sukanya Roy has won the 2011 Scripps National Spelling Bee crown to retain the coveted honour for the community for the fourth year in a row.
Roy, 14, an eighth-grader at Abington Heights Middle School, Pennsylvania, said she knew as soon as she heard "cymotrichous" that she'd get the word right and win the championship Thursday night.
"My heart started pounding, I guess," she said. "I couldn't believe it. . It's just amazing. It's hard to put into words."
It was Roy's third trip to the national spelling bee, and she had credited her past experience with keeping her calm and relaxed heading into the finals. She tied for 12th place in 2009 and 20th place in 2010.
Roy speaks Bengali and every summer travels to India to visit family. She hopes to pursue a career in international relations.
Roy is the ninth Indian-American in the last 13 years, a run that began when Nupur Lala captured the crown in 1999 and was later featured in the documentary "Spellbound."
The winner will be awarded a $30,000 cash prize, a trophy, a $2,500 US savings bond, a complete reference library, a $5,000 scholarship and $2,600 in reference works and other prizes.
Anamika Veeramani had scored a hat-trick for Indian-Americans in taking the crown last year.

Thanks for your suggestion. I did query about the kind of advertising that we can do. It doesn't look like we'll get much money. Since most of the people are viewing the forums and forums typically have low advertising rates because people using them tend to be highly engrossed in the topic.

Guys,
Is this really bad news for those with pending I-140? Does it mean they expect 140 processing to be so overloaded that they can't commit to premium?
My 140/485 was filed in mid-Feb 07. Any ideas what to expect as far as 140 processing is concerned? I am pretty sure 485 processing will slow down as they will get busy with so many new applications and working on new EAD/AP applications.

While I am happy for you and your success along with your spouse, I personally consider it as being at the right time in right places making decisions that were in your reach. I do agree that you did lot of planning. Most of the people here run on one income and spouses on H4/F1. So they dont have the edge you had/have. I might sound harsh in saying this but the matter of fact is that the 2 incomes lead to savings which lead to buying a home(s). 1 income, you wouldnt have done all these by yourself. I know several people with 2 incomes and most of them have done this :) Those who havent were the kind of folks who are happy having their 100K in bank rather raking up 200K in equity. I am sure there are a lot of things you can do with a US Citizenship.

I feel that this forum is totally going in a direction where people are seeking some sort of solace in discussing stuff that doesnt directly relate here. Now that all of us had discussed about what we can do with a GC can we streamline our effort to what we can do to get a GC.

I agree that EAD renewals will take longer than usual because of our sheer volume. And there is no interim EAD. Do you guys think its safer to be on H1B (mine is valid till 2010) rather than EAD/AP?

We are working on 3-4 amendments that reduce retrogression and help with backlog candidates with longer H1 extensions (Instead of 1 year H1b extensions).
Please keep in mind the Core group has given 3 months of devoted time and its in core group's interest also to get things done.
These amendments will go into the final bill before the debate is over and we will let everyone know the time/date details just a few moments before they are being introduced, if its possible to do that.

It would not have been good to get ourselves mentioned in article that has largely advocated illegals. We have been trying to separete ourselves from illegals. Remember???

* There are four reauthorization legislative bills in the Congress. (1) Conrad 30 NIW bill , (2) Regional Center Pilot Investment bill (EB-5), (3) Nonministerial Religious Worker R-1 and Special Immigration bill, and (4) E-Verify Electronic Employment Authorization bill. The E-Verify reauthorization bill is very controversial adn currently facing a stong political opposition from political forces. The House passed the first three bills and forwarded to the Senate quite some time back, but as we reported on 08/02/2008, the Senate floor referred the bills to the Senate Judiciary at the last minute before the Senate left the Hill on August 2, 2008. These bills are currently presented to the Senate in two different formats: One is the format of the Senate's consent to each of these House bills separately. The other is Senator Specter's consolidated bill that put together all of these four bills into one bill. Obviously, Senator Specter's strategy must have been to tie the reauthorization bills to the controversial E-Verify Reauthorization bill. We reported that he apparently changed his mind and was pressuring the Senate Majority Leader to introduce E-Verify bill in the Senate first. Accordingly, it is unclear which strategies will work better to get these reauthorization bills passed in the Senate before they return to the election recess in early October.
* The Senate is scheduled to return to the session on September 5, 2008, Friday, and to pick up the defense appropriation billl debates. The House is not scheduled to return to the session until September 8, 2008, Monday. Procedurally, unless each of the reauthorization bills is consented by the Senate floor without amendment, they will have to go to the conference committee or the House just consent to the Senate's amendment. The problem is the House bills were referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee just before the recess and unless a sufficient political pressure is added to the Judiciary Committee Chairman Lehey, they are destined to go nowhere when it comes to the time frame. On the other hand, Senator's consolidated bill faces its own problem because of the E-Verify reauthorization proposal. Besides, even if the Senate floor quickly takes up this consolidated bill, since it is a Senate bill, it will have to be presented to the House for their consent for the Senate versions. The question is how and when all of these actions will be taken up by the leaders of the Senate. The answer appears to be obvious. The relevant immigrant communities must recharge themselves and act quickly to add pressure on the Senate leaders to take up the bills quickly as soon as they return to the session. We believe in this organization's hard work. Our presence here proves it. But I also think blaming members might not achieve anything except hostility.
If we do not get enough funds then we need to advertise IV. We need to have better web pages to have a look of a professional organization as compared to having a look of , lawyers website etc. For this we need ideas. We need better communication from IV administrators on their webpages. Right now if someone new comes to this website, it is does not look more than getting their immigration related questions answered. Plus their should be easy tabs to print IV advertisement for community boards, sending emails to friends to participate, or any other ideas. Also we need some form of direction of what to do and how to do it. Right now I don't even see easy tabs for access information from congressman, senators etc. Just throwing out some ideas. I am sure some other people have better ideas than I do.
Why dont you start by updating your profile, contributing money and volunteering your time to IV. You joined a couple days ago and have started lecturing IV admin as if you are an expert.
You came to the site and started dismissing IV flower campaign and praised AILA.
Why don't you volunteer for the site and its content and send an email to IV for it? And dont tell me you do not have time. If you do not have the time, then contribute money to IV because that is what I did too.
